Food of the Week: Souvlaki

Overview

Souvlaki is a traditional Greek food commonly made of pork, shaped into a kebab on a skewer. Mainly served with Tzatziki (a yogurt and cucumber sauce), Souvlaki is a popular fast food found in many restaurants in Greece.

History

Souvlaki was first introduced to the Greek in 1924 when an Egyptian explorer came to Athens and opened a Souvlaki shop. It immediately became successful and more shops began to open up. You can still visit the first Souvlaki shop named Αιγυπτιακόν (Aigyptiakon) here

Ingredients

While the most common and traditional protein in Souvlaki is pork, it can also be made with chicken, lamb, and beef. Although it is commonly confused with Gyro, a dish made of souvlaki in pita bread, Souvlaki is typically served on a skewer or with pita as a side on a plate. Souvlaki is also often served with fries, or topped with sliced vegeatbles, such as tomato and onion.
